This September is possibly one of the most exciting times in the history of English food since the invention of the cake. Food and cooking and nutrition becomes a compulsory part of the

curriculum so in primary schools for the first time they have to learn about

food and nutrition. Now I love talking to kids about food and teaching cookery and I love blowing food up in order to make them fascinated by it but I don't know if my way of talking about food is the best way.

When I grew up, food was awful. I grew up in the 70s. The food was terrible. There weren't

that many ingredients available. Food in school was awful.

Cookery lessons were grim, the food was gray, I grew up snapping

frozen burgers off the end of a log of cheap meat and sticking it under the grill.

But later on I got inspired by it because I had a few experiences that made me find

food fascinating and fun and sensual and exciting and naughty.

And that inspired me to become a writer and to become pretty adventurous in the sorts of foods that I eat.
