Hi, blood money listeners. Welcome to this week's bonus content. I'm talking today, of course,

about the episode Supermom serial killer Barbara Stager. I'm not going to be with you too long today

because, first of all, it's my birthday. And even though I said I was not going to work and I was

going to take a complete day off. That's obviously not happening.

I would love to take half a day off.

But the truth is that I find such solace in sitting in my closet and talking to you out there that it's pretty much one of my favorite things to do.

So I cannot think of a better way to start a birthday than to do this.

Moving on.

A lot of people after that episode aired wrote me a version of the same question,

which was, my father or my mother or a friend of mine is dating someone and I think they're shady.

I think they're a con artist.

What can I do?

And there's really good news and bad news when it comes to this question. Because as someone

who's a licensed PI, my first thought goes to background checks. The bad news here, of course,

is that someone like Barbara Stager would not have shown up in a routine background check,

because she really had no red flags on paper. Unfortunately, so many

red-collar criminals slipped through the cracks. Every time she would get in trouble, she would steal

from someone at work, she would just get reprimanded. There was no official criminal paper trail.

Then to compound that problem, at least for the most part, she seemed to be current on

most of her accounts. So, even though I don't know for sure, I think that a lot of her bad

financial mismanagement would not have shown up in a traditional credit report. This is where the
