The The In the early 1970s British filmmakers were producing dark macabre horror movies about

twisted people living in rural isolated areas and it's these movies that we most commonly

now associate with the term folk horror.

However, across the Atlantic, American filmmakers such as John Borman and Sam Pekinpar

were also producing horror movies which shared many tropes of the folk horror formula.

These movies centered on isolated remote communities

and particularly on their dangerous savage residence.

But these movies, as with so much of American cinema at this time had an especially nasty, violent

and brutal edge.

And still to this day remained some of the most shocking, divisive and controversial movies in mainstream cinema history.
