The The It's a beautiful calm, warm evening in England's mountains green at the height of British

summertime, far away from any urban interference or modern civilization. There's a cool gentle breeze whispering

through the trees, the lush green grass stemming from the rich, earthy soil beneath, the sounds of wildlife and the glowing orange sun

setting beyond the horizon. On the surface everything seems calm, peaceful, tranquil.

But there's something else in the air, something off,

something dark beneath the surface.

All around there's a sense of history, something old which still

somehow lingers on. The soil is rich with memories of times past, ancient traditions, festivities, old religions, beliefs, superstitions,

macabre sacrificial rituals and an overpowering stench of death.

Of all the sub-genres of horror, folk horror seems for some reason to be the most difficult

one to define.

This could be due to the fact that even though some of the films within it are 50 years old,

the term folk horror and its definitions weren't really popularized until long after the fact.

But it may also be to do with the fact that unlike slashes or ghost movies

which have particular rules and conventions, folk horror is more about a mood, an aesthetic,

a soundscape.

It's hard to know exactly what a folk horror is,
