This is the Devil Spring System in Florida.

It's known for having some of the most crystal clear waters anywhere on Earth,

and with a massive cave system at the bottom of the spring, it attracts divers from all around the world.

As you might imagine, this has led to some horrifying incidents.

If you've been following the channel for some time, you probably know that Florida is one of the best places on earth for both scuba diving and cave diving. Because in addition

to the warm waters along Florida's coastline, Florida has an abundance of something known

as karst topography. This is where much of the ground is composed of soluble rock like limestone,

and over time water sources like rain dissolve this rock. This then leads to the formation

of all sorts of tunnels, sinkholes, and some of the largest

caves on Earth. And so it should come as no surprise that with warm weather almost year-round

and tons of caves to dive in, that there are several dive sites in the state that rank among the

most dangerous dive sites on Earth. Located in Gilchrist County, just northwest of Gainesville, Florida,

is a privately owned nature park called

Guinea Springs. Again, there are literally hundreds of freshwater springs in the state,

but Guinea Springs easily attract some of the most visitors of any of them, often to the tune of

hundreds of thousands every year. Guinea Springs was once owned by a Florida land baron for many years,

but once the land baron died, his estate put the land up for sale, which attracted the attention of real estate investors.

Immediately while visiting Guinea Springs during the late 1970s, one of these investors fell in love with the property,

but he sat on it for three years before deciding that he wanted to purchase the park.

During that time, he had also developed a passion for scuba diving and saw tons of opportunities

in the park for those with a similar interest.
