Summary

Isaac follows up on Lucas's weaponlight video with an audio-only podcast about how much has changed in the flashlight world over the last few decades, how government regulation gets us the wrong kinds of disruptions when a truly disruptive technology appears, and he digs a bit deeper into the Olight flashlight can of worms.

Welcome to another T-Rex talk. This is Isaac Botkin, and this particular T-R-X talk is one of the audio-only,

0:08.4

podcast-only versions. This one was not a YouTube live stream. I had been planning on doing an

0:14.3

audio-only podcast upload every week in addition to the YouTube live stream that we do every week.

0:21.9

And then I also upload onto the podcast.

0:24.0

And I hadn't really picked a date to do that, but this seems like a pretty good week

0:27.9

because the very last YouTube live stream that we did was Lucas talking about weapon lights.

0:35.1

And it was a great live stream.

0:37.3

He demonstrated things very very clearly on

0:41.2

video but they're not very clearly demonstrated on audio so this seemed like as good a week as any to

0:46.8

try to add an additional audio only podcast for those of you that don't have the time or the

0:52.5

ability to watch youtube videos and would prefer to have an

0:56.3

audio-only podcast to listen to. So I am going to talk a little bit about flashlight's technology,

1:02.1

but also just sort of technology in general, particularly disruptive technology. So as I was

1:08.7

watching Lucas's live stream and moderating the ridiculous comments that always end up on the YouTube videos,

1:17.1

and fortunately don't seem to end up on any of the podcast, another reason that I like the podcasting side of things.

1:24.4

It's kind of amazing to me, just how far the technology of flashlights has come over the years.

1:30.3

I'm pretty old. In fact, I'm old enough that I remember being part of the Radio Shack Battery Club.

1:37.6

Every month, you could go into Radio Shack. And if you were a member of the Battery Club, which was some kind of

1:43.2

primitive loyalty program, you would get a battery. And so I was very eager to go to Radio Shack once

1:49.8

and I think it batteries because flashlights, when I was little, they went through batteries

1:55.5

very quickly. And the little dinky incandescent bulbs that they had were not very bright.

2:01.3

And if you're relatively old, you will remember a time when flashlights were pale shadows of what they have now become.
