Summary

Today's reading from the Gospel of John offers a compelling meditation about the importance of Christ for the activities of the Church. Christians are meant to be fishers of men, but when we operate according to our own agendas and efforts we will catch nothing. We must act under the Lord's direction. If we follow Christ we will do great good indeed.

genius, he was a literary genius as well. And we see now in this story, in many ways, the

whole life of the church, if we know how to decipher it symbolically. So we're in the

1:13.0

period after the resurrection. We hear this. At that time, Jesus revealed himself again

we're Simon Peter, Thomas called Dittimus, Nathaniel from Canaan, Galilee, Zebede's sons

1:29.6

and two others of his disciples. So right away now we have to pause. Whenever you find

1:35.0

the disciples in a boat with Peter, you're dealing with the church. So that symbol is

1:42.3

used up and down the Gospels. John uses it very clearly here. So it's about the church

1:47.3

in those earliest of days. Yes. But also it's about the church up and down the ages to

1:52.9

our present day. So right away we're meant to say to understand that this story is not

1:57.2

just about a long, long time ago. It's about us right now. Then we hear Simon Peter said
