| 0:00.0 | What's up you'll hear at listeners. I'm Adam Manus, and today's a very special episode of the podcast. |
| 0:20.5 | It's the first take Friday, as you might expect, but Peter Martin is not here. Instead, we've got a great replacement. Actually, way better than Peter. We've got the great Sean Jones in here. Sean, how's it going, man? It's going well. I don't know if I'm a better, I'm a good replacement, but I'll take that. So thank you. Man. So I think our listeners are going to be excited to have you here on the show. You're in town. You're in St. Louis just across the alley all weekend at Jeff St. Louis. What are you doing over there? Yeah. Since Wednesday, we've been playing a tribute to Clark Terry celebrating his centennial. The centennial, I believe, actually was last year. |
| 0:56.1 | Yeah. But of course, due to COVID complications and so on and so forth, we've moved it to this |
| 1:02.5 | year. And it's been a hell of a run, man. We're having a great time. I mean, he really is such a |
| 1:07.5 | legend everywhere, but especially here in St. Louis. I don't know. The fact that there's not |
| 1:11.8 | a statue out there of Clark. We should lobby Jazz St. Louis Grand Center for a statue of Clark Terry |
| 1:17.0 | out there in his hometown. You know what I mean? That's a great idea, actually, man. Yeah. I mean, |
| 1:22.5 | you know, there's obviously, there's a reason to celebrate Miles Davis. Of course, he was iconic, but Miles Davis came out of CT. |
| 1:30.1 | I know. Clark can just bring him around all the clubs here in town. |
| 1:33.1 | So did you get to spend much time with Clark? |
| 1:35.5 | I had the opportunity to spend a little bit of time with Clark. |
| 1:37.9 | The first time I met him was actually on the phone. |
| 1:40.5 | A mentor introduced him to me on the phone, man. |
| 1:44.7 | He had a lot of great things to say. |
| 1:46.6 | But later on, I met him at the Jazz Standard doing a Fats Navarro tribute. |
| 1:52.1 | Yeah. |
| 1:52.4 | And I've got a chance to play right before him. |
| 1:54.7 | So I was kind of the warm-up act to Clark Terry. |
| 1:57.5 | And it was really amazing, man. |
| 1:59.1 | He's been supportive. |
| 2:00.4 | And he was awesome all the way up to the end. Oh, man. Yeah, what a great spirit. I got to meet him a couple of times, too, and just, I mean, he lived the music that we talk all the time about, you know, that it's a vocabulary. And it was just him, just whether the horn was in his mouth or not. It was just all him pouring out. It was just great, man. Yeah, it's a deep part of him, man. |
| 2:18.7 | I mean, when he was on stage, there were no barriers. |
