Summary

The House passed President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” in a narrow vote last week. The  legislation – which is over 1,000 pages long – is the signature of Trump’s second term, as it would enact his hallmark tax and immigration policies. However, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said it could add 2.3 trillion to the national debt, and that’s seemingly a pain point for Elon Musk. In a snippet of an interview airing Sunday on CBS, the world’s richest person said he was "disappointed" with the bill. Forbes senior editor Alan Ohnsman joined Brittany Lewis on "Forbes Talks" to discuss.

for joining me. Hi, Brittany. Good to be with you. Good to be with you. Last week, the House passed

Trump's big, beautiful bill in a narrow vote,

0:22.6

and this legislation was over a thousand pages, and it was the signature of President Trump's

0:27.4

second term. It would enact his hallmark tax and immigration policies. However, the nonpartisan

0:32.9

Congressional Budget Office said it could add $2.3 trillion to the overall national debt, and that's where

0:38.9

Elon Musk took issue with it. In a snippet of an interview that's airing on Sunday, Elon Musk said

0:44.9

he was disappointed with the bill. So what are your thoughts on Elon Musk publicly criticizing

0:50.0

President Trump's trademark policy? Well, it is interesting, and it's kind of surprising because it signals a bit of a shift in their relationship, obviously.

1:00.0

You know, no one was closer to Trump, it seemed, for several months, and no one was more generous giving him over a couple hundred million dollars for his campaign last year.

1:09.0

And in his doge role, you know, he seemed like co-president for a period of time.

1:15.6

And for him previously to have said he was dialing back his Doge activities and his,

1:21.6

like, activities in the Trump administration, that was one thing.

1:25.6

But now to come out and say he's disappointed with the bill,

1:31.9

you know, it is a subtle or soft but public criticism of this piece of legislation that Trump really

1:38.5

wants. So that is curious. I think what's sort of surprising, though, is his objections, you know, suddenly

1:47.7

that he's a deficit hawk, which is kind of curious because that's really not been his

1:53.1

thing in the past. I don't think that's something he'd really been known for. So his criticism

1:59.7

seems to be that it's, as you pointed out,

2:01.8

it dramatically would increase deficits. It doesn't reduce spending enough. I mean, the surprising

2:07.9

thing, of course, is that Bill guts federal support for clean energy. It guts many programs aimed
