But we start with a grand dam, quite literally.

Writer Fiona Kidman was made a dame companion of the New Zealand Order of Merritt in 1998 for her

services to literature and is as revered in literary circles there as the all blacks are on the rugby

pitch and flight of the concords is in my house.

Over a long career, she's primarily explored the lives of women against the backdrop of

tumultuous cultural changes. The title of her latest All Day at the Movies sums up the

episodic nature of this family saga, delivered in a series of snapshots over the decades,

a bit like watching someone's home movies.
