To my knowledge, the elf on the shelf causes mischief in the house, and if you touch it, Santa doesn't come.

But the elf is also keeping an eye on the kids and tattletailing.

The elf on the shelf story is about magical Scott elves sent from the North Pole to watch over children during Christmas and report their behavior to Santa.

Each night, the elf flies to the North Pole, then returns to hide in his new spot in the house for the children to find each morning, creating a daily game of hide-and-seek.

A key rule is that the children cannot touch the elf, or it will lose its Christmas magic,

though parents can move it and create mischievous scenes.

The tradition started as a family story by Carol, something word I can't pronounce,

inspired by her childhood elf,isbee, and became a
