Hey, everyone. I'm David Chalien, the CNN political director. This is the Daily D.C. impeachment watch.

0:11.5

Every weeknight, we unpack the latest developments in this historic political drama.

0:16.5

Today, I'm joined by two insightful guests. In a few minutes, we'll be talking with CNN political commentator Karen Finney, a Democratic operative. But first, I'm joined by my colleague CNN National Security Reporter, Jeremy. Welcome back to the podcast. Thanks for having me.

So Nancy Pelosi made it official. She actually sent out a letter to all of her colleagues saying that she intends on transmitting the articles of impeachment.

0:42.1

We've been waiting for this.

0:43.1

We thought maybe it was going to happen this week.

0:47.4

But no, she's holding out still a little bit more.

0:50.4

But it seems to me, by releasing this letter on a Friday, she didn't want days and

0:55.4

days more of coverage, sort of the drumbeat up until next week whenever she finally does it.

1:06.0

Yeah, that's right. This was kind of the logical conclusion to this week after we had a week,

1:10.3

as you said, a week's worth

1:11.6

of Pelosi saying, I'm waiting. On Tuesday, she said she wanted to see the rules of the trial

1:16.9

from Mitch McConnell before she actually sent this. He said he wouldn't do that. And now she's

1:21.8

going to go forward whether or not McConnell puts anything out. I think there's a couple of things.

1:25.9

She didn't want to have her members have to go home and explain why were they holding this up. There was a risk, I think, for Democrats

1:32.0

if they waited too long that this turned into looking overtly political. Pelosi and Democrats had

1:37.6

talked about how this was an urgent threat to the Constitution. That's why they pushed to impeach

1:41.8

the president last month. And now, you know, if they were going to wait for weeks and weeks and weeks to try to enact concessions, does that make it look like it's just a political game?

1:49.7

Now, I want to read one portion of this letter.

1:52.6

I won't read it word for word.

1:54.3

I'll try to just hit the highlights of her four bullet points.
