Hello and welcome to Witness History on the BBC World Service. I am Islene Cor. In 1984, anti-seek violence in

India resulted in thousands of deaths, rapes and the displacement of thousands of

people following a series of events that set India's Hindu majority

against the Sikh minority and a warning this program contains descriptions that some

listeners may find distressing.

In June 1984 India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered an attack on the

holiest site in the Sikh religion, the Golden Temple in Amritsar. On October 31st of

that year, Mrs Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in what

was thought to be a revenge attack.

We regret to announce the death of the Prime Minister, Mr. Indira Gandhi.

She was critically injured this morning.

Almost immediately, attacks against Sikhs began across the country.

One of those killed was Nirpeth Kaur's father, Nirmel Singh.

For her, it marked the beginning of a long journey seeking justice.

My father was a prominent person in the Sikh community at all well-built Sikh who was also

a successful businessman.
