A lot has changed in my household over the past two months, but one change is the frequent

worrying of a sewing machine.

With face masks, part of our new normal, my wife has taken the sewing masks for our friends

and family, some of them using scraps of fabric lying around the house.

Across the country, private citizens are also stepping in to fulfill our health care systems

need for more complex equipment, from face shields to ventilators.

Whether they know it or not, they're part of a broader cultural phenomenon called the

Maker Movement.

For a glimpse inside the movement, we've reached out to Clive Thompson, whose article
