Larry Waters had a healthy fear of ice

He'd been around it and lived near it long enough to know that it wasn't anything to play around with.

And that's why he parked at the edge of the lake and unloaded his four-wheeler and decided to take that across and not the heavier vehicle.

With his wife, Christie on the back,

he cautiously began the journey across the lake,

noticing that in the layer of snow that covered the surface,

there were tracks from cars that had evidently

gone through it rather recently.

And so he assumed if the heavier car,

the heavier truck could make it across

than he could, too, on the much smaller lighter vehicle.

He was kind of whizzing across and at the halfway mark he heard and felt at the same time

the ice cracking and the vehicle jolting and then it pitched forward and in his words before he knew it had stopped dropped and rolled straight into the icy waters below the lake.

The vehicle sank to the bottom like a stone,

but he and his wife, Chrissy,

they were floundering there in that hole,

and both of them instinctively made their way
