Let's begin in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Let's call to mind all those we've promised to pray for.

We've been meditating on the fact that we can get control of our disordered feelings that so often cause temptation and sin. And in this effort it's really helpful to

understand the 11 God-given feelings or emotions that get out of hand. Today we reflect on the feelings of hope and despair. But first, an

important distinction. There is the virtue of hope and the sin of despair, which are very different from the feelings of hope and despair.

Hope as a virtue is the decision to continue striving for heaven,

whereas the sin of despair is the decision not to strive for heaven and in this sense it's the greatest

sin. Now both the virtue of hope and the sin of despair are decisions. One is always good

and the other is always bad. But there are also feelings of hope and despair. Hope as a

feeling prompts you to keep trying. Despair as a feeling prompts you to give up and each of these feelings is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Our father who art in heaven, hallow would be your name. Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us to stay our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who

trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil,

amen.
