So the question everybody wants to know,

how long do you wait before giving negative feedback to a direct? I mean a week, a month, a year.

A year, that's a year, because all you have to do is give them a review at the end of the year, you're good to go.

So two things I want to say about to do is give them a review at the end of the year you're good to go.

So two things I want to say about this guidance before we continue.

First of all, we have other guidance about how many minutes,

seconds, or hours, or days

to wait before you give feedback on a particular instance.

In other words, if Mike's my boss and I'm late to a meeting, is it necessary to give me immediate feedback?

No, because I just fire you right away.

Yeah, exactly. And we have guidance on the length of time to wait once you've decided to give feedback.

This is not that.

A grace period is, do you overlook an instance of potential negative feedback giving your direct grace and saying

I'll only talk to them if they do it a second time I'll give them a chance to correct.

To me that's different than how long do you wait once you've decided to actually give feedback.

The second thing I want to say is I alluded to this with the annual review thing.

I share this routinely with folks.

I may have done it before in previous guidance, but I want to do it again because it's important.

Most managers think of annual reviews as part of performance feedback.
