Here are some of today's headlines from the Los Angeles Times.

The U.S. Justice Department is escalating tensions with California,

requesting a full list of non-citizen

inmates being held in state jails. L.A. Times reporters say the department is asking for this data

so they can deport people who have committed crimes here and are not citizens. This is an attempt to

dodge the state sanctuary laws, which usually bar local authorities from enforcing

civil immigration rules. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department recently transferred inmates to

ICE for the first time in years. However, Sheriff Robert Luna said they aren't giving the government

any names, because that information becomes public shortly after bookings. Sheriff Luna's department has denied these requests before,

but he says they'll have no choice but to hand over inmates

if the government presents court-authorized warrants.

The University of California is facing pressure

to increase their tuition due to White House cuts, lower state budgets,

and inflation.

Jowid Khalim reports that UC trustees want to boost the annual tuition increase cap from 5%

to 7% in order to offset higher operation costs and budget cuts.

When they raised tuition in the past, it froze rates for students who

enrolled before the increase to keep costs steady. But that cohort-based tuition plan is set to

expire in 2026 and could be overturned in a vote. Many are concerned that this plan is driven by a

desire to increase revenue instead of resources for students.
