Good Monday morning. I'm Annie Reese and welcome to your Politico Playbook audio briefing.

I hope you all had a better night last night than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

And I say this is someone from Missouri. He deserved better. But anyway, we've got bigger fish to fry than my Super Bowl

grievances this week. The Senate impeachment trial starts tomorrow and the rest of this week is

going to be bananas. Senate Democrats are at a bit of a crossroads on the best impeachment tactic.

Option one, do they go all out in the trial by calling a long parade of witnesses?

Or option 2, do they concede that a conviction with a two-thirds majority is a lost cause

and finish the trial as quickly as possible so that they can just get on with Joe Biden's

agenda? Many House impeachment managers want firsthand testimony to help prove their case that

Trump incited the January 6th riot.

But Playbook is told that Chuck, Nancy, and Biden officials are eager to speed things along.

That's why some of these house managers have been thinking of calling witnesses who could change Chuck and Nancy's minds.

And the minds of the 17 Senate GOP senators they need to convict Trump.

Some possible witnesses?

Having Capitol police officers tell their stories about fighting the mob,

or inviting Republican officials in Georgia who are pressured by Trump to overturn the state's election tally,

or even former White House officials who observed Trump on the day of the riots.

But Schumer and other Senate Democrats argue that they don't necessarily need witnesses

since Trump's crimes were in plain sight in videos and tweets.

Anyway, where does this leave things?
