Here's the latest in the government funding talks. At this point, people involved in the shutdown talks believe there's a good chance they will

come to an agreement ahead of the February 15th deadline.

Here are a few things you need to keep an eye on.

Our colleagues noted yesterday Mitch McConnell is strongly opposed to a stopgap spending

bill that could allow the negotiations to drag on past February 15th.

The White House is also opposed.

So these talks have to wrap up in the next few days to allow for a vote next week.

One thing we are watching is the funding number. This is basic, but keep an eye on it.

The top line DHS funding level in 2018 was $1.3 billion for border security. Republicans want more than that. That shouldn't be

hard since Democrats already agreed to $1.6 billion before this mess got underway. Also, technology

is a focus. The president is maniacally focused on the border barrier, but Republicans and Democrats

on this committee seem to be more interested

in beefing up technology on the southern border as a way to deter illegal immigration and other

bad behavior. Expect both sides to play that up. They are moving border security into the 21st century.

Barriers are going to have to be a part of this. No, Trump is not likely to get his border wall come next week, but he will get some sort of barrier or sets of barriers he could declare victory on if he wants.

Remember, the United States has barriers on its border with Mexico and current law dictates additional borders be built.

Pelosi has conceded that some fencing, Normandy barriers, for example, can be useful at the border.

Beds could be another sticking point.

Democrats have, for years, been vocal about their skepticism for the need of massive amounts of additional detention beds for illegal migrants.
