Summary

Gene and special guest cohost Curt Collins present Greg Eghigian. Greg is a Professor of History at Penn State University. In his research and teaching, he specializes in the history of science and medicine. He regularly teaches a course entitled “The History of Monsters, Aliens, and the Supernatural.” And he is presently finishing a book on the social history of the UFO and alien contact phenomena. Greg’s chief interest is in the human side of the paranormal – in other words, how individuals and societies in history have tried to make sense of these matters over time. During this interview, he’ll focus on the flying saucer field, and some of the fascinating characters who were deeply involved.

0:32.0	When we first spoke Greg Gigan on the Paracast, I was looking at his credentials and mentioned that I'm quoting him,
0:42.0	I think it's important to chat about the development of saucer clubs and UFO organizations
0:48.0	over the course of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
0:53.0	And Greg, you've been talking about me, I think.
0:57.6	How's that? I was originally a reader of a magazine called Flying Saucers by Ray Palmer. Do you know who
1:05.8	Ray Palmer was? Oh yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay. And I met him once, by the way.
1:11.0	Oh, real.
1:12.1	Neat.
1:12.5	Yes, I can tell you stories.
1:14.3	So anyway, there was a section in Flying Saucers magazine called Saucer Club News, which was kind of like a social network, maybe an early precursor to Facebook.
1:27.4	And you would put information about your saucer club.
1:30.4	If you didn't have a saucer club, you'd form one.
1:33.5	Most of my friends for the next 50 years or so came out of saucer club news,
1:40.9	like Jerry Clark and Alan Greenfield and Rick Hilberg and others came from
1:46.0	Saucer Club News came from Ray Palmer so that's number one number two as I mentioned I had
1:52.8	interviewed him once Palmer and he's quite a character in fact before we got started in the show
1:58.5	I'm reading a book Greg which maybe you were heard about called The Man from Mars.
