On Wednesday Heathrow is likely to say more on its expansion plans for an added runway – and Gatwick is hoping to hear a decision from the transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, about its hopes to bring the standby runway into permanent use. I’ve been speaking to Stewart Wingate, chief executive of London Gatwick.

| 0:47.4 | runway. It's routinely used at the moment as a taxiway in normal operations, but we do use it |

| 0:54.9 | the main runway that we have here at Gatwick. For us to bring it into routine use and meet |
| 0:59.8 | all of the established safety requirements, which are global standards, then we do need to move the |
| 1:06.3 | centre line of the northern runway 12 metres to the north, so just 12 meters. And we'll do that by adding a strip of additional runway Ashfeld to the north of the runway, |
| 1:16.6 | enabling us to move the centre line 12 meters to create a separation between the main runway center line |
| 1:22.6 | and the Northern runway center line of 210 meters. |
| 1:25.6 | So that's the proposal that we put forward several years ago now, |
| 1:29.5 | and that's the fundamental proposal that has been considered by the planning inspectors, |
| 1:34.0 | and that's what allows us to use the two runways together. So in the future, around the turn of the decade, |
| 1:39.4 | what we'd anticipate is to have all of the planes that landed Gatwick land on the existing main runway |
| 1:45.3 | and to have the take-offs split between the existing main runway and the northern runway. |
