Summary

I'm in Compiègne in northern France, which has a compelling chateau to rival Versailles and Fontainebleau, and also the 'Armistice Carriage' – the railway car where the German surrender in World War I and the French surrender in World War II were both taken.

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast. It's Thursday the 23rd of February

0:07.9

and I have the great pleasure of talking to you from Compienne in northern France. Now you may not

0:16.5

know this town but I think it will be somewhat on the map in the summer of 2024.

0:23.6

That's because it's one of a select number of towns within easy reach of Paris by rail.

0:33.6

It takes about 40 minutes on a fast train and it costs about £12.

0:40.3

And therefore, during the Paris Olympics, it's going to be a really good idea to stay somewhere like this.

1:03.2

place to be and also of interest and I think it would be very difficult to find anywhere which

1:10.6

matches compien for a couple of reasons.

1:13.9

First of all, I'm walking past the chateau. It is a vast place. If you've been to Versailles

1:20.5

just outside Paris or to Fontainebleau to the southeast of Paris, you will get the idea.

1:26.4

It is one of the great houses of France.

1:30.8

The work was done largely for Napoleon and it has some astonishingly furnished rooms as well, of course, as the spectacular bore room. It's slightly more, I would say,

1:48.1

austere than extremely elaborate Versailles, but on the other hand, it's very accessible and

1:57.1

very uncrowded, which is good. There's also a very odd museum of the car and tourism,

2:04.8

which even though I like cars and I like tourism,

2:07.8

I slightly struggled with.

2:10.0

My apologies for that.

2:12.0

Very importantly, there is also a sombre memorial

2:15.4

in the woods about four miles outside compien and this is the surrender carriage
