On this day in 1982, Wayne Williams was found guilty of murdering two young men in Atlanta.

With his conviction, the Atlanta police closed the book on one of the deadliest chapters in the city's history.

Let's go back to 707 p.m. on February 27, 1982, as the jury filed into Judge Clarence Cooper's courtroom. Judge Cooper called the court to order as the jury took their seats.

The relatives of the two victims sat next to the families of 26 other murdered black children,

packing the room to its brim.

The air was heavy with expectation, as the district attorney pronounced Williams guilty.

The prosecutors and law enforcement sighed in relief.

Williams would never be allowed to get away with another crime.

For taking the lives of 27-year-old Nathaniel Cater and 21-year-old Jimmy Ray Payne,

he was sentenced to life in prison.

The day marked the end of a lengthy saga that started with Williams being pulled over in his car back on May 22, 1981.
