Matthew 10: 17-22 - 'The Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 728 (in 'Christ Jesus') - He also alludes to the Spirit in speaking to Nicodemus, to the Samaritan woman, and to those who take part in the feast of Tabernacles. To his disciples he speaks openly of the Spirit in connection with prayer and with the witness they will have to bear.

- 161 (in 'The Necessity of Faith') - Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation. “Since ‘without faith it is impossible to please [God]’ and to attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will anyone obtain eternal life ‘but he who endures to the end.’”

- 1821 (in 'Hope') - We can therefore hope in the glory of heaven promised by God to those who love him and do his will. In every circumstance, each one of us should hope, with the grace of God, to persevere “to the end” and to obtain the joy of heaven, as God’s eternal reward for the good works accomplished with the grace of Christ (abbreviated).

Hi everyone. Welcome back again to daily gospel exegesis.

0:14.5

We're continuing in the Gospel of Matthew today, a really fascinating gospel, a very Jewish one.

0:20.3

And we're looking at Matthew

0:21.8

chapter 10 verses 17 to 22. So I'll start by reading the text and then we'll have a go

0:29.1

at looking at what the text might mean on the literal level. Jesus instructed the 12 as follows.

0:40.7

Beware of men. They will hand you over to Sanhedrons and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake

0:47.1

to bear witness before them and the pagans. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say.

0:56.5

What you are to say will be given to you when the time comes, because it is not you who

1:01.8

will be speaking.

1:03.4

The spirit of your father will be speaking in you.

1:07.1

Brother will betray brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise against their parents

1:12.8

and have them put to death. You'll be hated by all men on account of my name. But the man who

1:19.8

stands firm to the end will be saved. So Jesus says these words in the context of a long speech that he's giving his 12 apostles.

1:29.9

So the audience is the 12 apostles, not all Christians and not even all disciples, actually.

1:35.5

It's just his 12 apostles because he's about to send them out on a special mission.

1:41.7

Now part of this speech is he's giving them instructions about how they should go into

1:47.2

the towns that they're about to go into around Israel, but he also gives them some warnings

1:52.7

about difficulties they're going to face a little bit later down the road when Jesus is gone

1:59.2

and they're continuing their preaching all around the world.

2:01.7

So there's a bit of both mixed in here.

2:03.6

So the immediate mission that they're about to go on and their future missions as well.

2:09.1

Verse 17, beware of men, they will hand you over to Sanhedrons and scourge you in their synagogues.
