| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Dr. Berg, Healthy Keto and Intermittent Fasting Podcast. Now, your host, the man taking your health to a whole new level. Dr. Eric Berg. |
| 0:14.0 | I want to talk about the fasting effects on a diabetic's eye. Now, just to be transparent, the study that I'm basing this on was done on mice. |
| 0:23.1 | So if you actually do have some pet mice that need better vision because they're diabetic, |
| 0:29.9 | you could apply this. This is what they found. There was a protective effect on the retina and other |
| 0:35.4 | nerves. The retina is nerve tissue. It's basically your brain |
| 0:39.8 | extending in your eye socket. This is what they found. This is actually quite interesting. |
| 0:46.8 | Fasting improves the microbiome. The microbiome are your friendly bacteria. It causes these microbes to modify change |
| 0:58.5 | bile acids or bile salts to this specific compound right here, which then gives protection |
| 1:07.2 | to your nerves. So if you're a diabetic, you're going to have problems with the vascular |
| 1:14.1 | supply, the capillary is to the nerves. The nerves are going to start to die off slowly in the |
| 1:18.6 | fingertips, in the toes, in the eyes, and the kidney. And so this compound counters the damage |
| 1:26.7 | to the nerve, not just in the eye, but other nerves as well. |
| 1:32.7 | Now, that would make sense because what's causing this problem originally is the high level of |
| 1:38.4 | sugar that a diabetic is living with. Okay, so sugar is very corrosive. It kind of rust out the nervous |
| 1:46.5 | system, the inside of the body, it destroys it. So you're basically not eating. So you're going to |
| 1:51.1 | eliminate this as well as drop and normalize your insulin levels. But what's even more fascinating |
| 1:58.0 | about this is that when you fast, your microbes actually improve. |
| 2:04.9 | It's fascinating. They start to increase the resistance to oxidative stress. |
| 2:10.4 | They start to diversify. They actually build up their community. They become stronger. |
| 2:17.1 | You would think if you starve them, they would |
| 2:19.2 | die off faster. No, they live longer, okay? Because there are certain genes that kick in that are |
| 2:25.0 | survival genes. And obviously, they've been coping with starvation for a very, very long time, |
