Welcome to the Eurointelligence podcast. I'm Wolfgang Munchau and with me are Zuzana Monshank and Jack Smith.

This morning we would like to talk about farmers and farmers' protests that have sprung up all over Europe.

0:13.5

There was a funny scene when Victor Orban descended on Brussels and he got out of his car and immediately spotted a farmer's protest, which is these days

0:23.0

not that hard to spot in European big cities. And he immediately spotted an opportunity to express

0:29.4

solidarity with a populist cause for him. And the classic slogan that is the people versus the

1:27.5

emissions. Naturally, when you use kind of nitrogen-based fertilizer, some of that ends up getting

1:32.3

into the environment, and that can have an effect on ecosystems. This was a problem in the Netherlands

1:38.0

for a couple of reasons. One of them is that the Netherlands has quite a large agriculture industry,

1:42.5

so it's actually the, well, at least as of last year,
