You gotta hand it to the farmers, man.

Just a few weeks ago, they were here in Brussels, jamming the roads,

hundreds of tractors, burning tires on Pazilux, spraying manure on cops. They did have

some specific demands among all the chaos, like dialing back Green Deal rules and stopping

cheap food imports from Ukraine.

So in my other job here at Politico, I write about lobbying, and that's all schmoozing and white

papers. But wouldn't you know it, these farmers got way better results, way faster.

There was this idea to make funds under the common agriculture policy, known as

cap, contingent on meeting new green targets. That's gone. Cutting pesticide use? No longer an issue.

Promotion of eating less meat? Out the window. And last but not least, imports from Ukraine have been severely curbed.

Read it and weep, city slicker lobbyists.

Usually it takes years to get anything done in Brussels, but this U-turn took just weeks.

Then again, timing was in the farmer's favor.

These changes are just in time for the crucial European election in June.

Is this a sign of a broader green backlash at the ballot box?
