Summary
Host Ian Hartitz breaks down the fantasy football value of Josh Allen ahead of the 2021 season. The verdict was out on Allen being a great real life quarterback before the start of 2020; just realize he's always been a great fantasy signal-caller. We saw absurd improvements from Allen in essentially every passing category in 2020, and his rushing production remained as lofty as ever. This offensive line (again) looks plenty capable, while the pass-catchers are just as good if not better than last year. Ian concludes the podcast with his specific ranking for Allen as well as his thoughts on where to put Hawaiian shirts in the closet.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the PFF fantasy football podcast. I'm your host, Ian Hartitz. And today we continue our fantasy file series with the reigning defending undisputed fantasy football cubie one of the world. |
| 0:20.0 | Josh Allen number 17 your programs number one in your hearts. Look, ever since I stepped foot in PFF, which was last gym. So happy one year to me. |
| 0:31.0 | I've been the resident Josh Allen super fan. Now look, this was not this is not my way of saying like I saw this coming that I just knew Josh Allen could be this future MVP candidate and all that absolutely not I loved Josh Allen for a lot of the same reasons only to a higher extent that I talk about what guys like Drew lock. |
| 0:49.0 | I love the 2018 2019 version of Josh Allen because he was this entertaining reckless gunslinger that had the most, you know, yellow ball, DGF attitude we've ever seen. I mean, the stuff this guy did was, you know, incredible on a hilarious scale at times. He unironically through a past 60 yards down field and overtime of a wild card game to his double covered fullback. |
| 1:15.0 | Before that moment, he later old with under two minutes to go to I think Dawson knocks after running for like 20 yards. I mean the plays that Josh Allen put on film from 2018 2019 don't worry. I have a Twitter with those exact highlights so you can check out over at I heart it's the plays he put on film were hilarious did not always lead to great real life goodness. |
| 1:36.0 | I was like 1512 with Alan starting during the first two years never finished with the top 20 scoring offense during those two seasons. So in real life, there was a lot to still be out there. You know, is he actually going to be a great real life quarterback. |
| 1:49.0 | But he was always a great fancy quarterback because what do we say on here people do all threat cubies are the closest thing fancy football has to a cheat code right there alongside receiving our bees and Josh Allen during his first two years in the league total 17 rushing touchdowns happen to add on another eight and 2020 and this takes us to, you know, what we all saw happen. |
| 2:11.0 | So that was Josh Allen all the hell out. I mean, I'm just I guess my kind of reasoning for starting off the entertainment factor like nobody could have seen this big of a jump coming. He improved from 2018 to 2019 by a little bit, you know, yards for time from 6.5 to 6.7. |
| 2:29.0 | So we saw the first completion rate from 64.7% 71.7%. We saw him take a step forward in 2019. And that was great. But the 2020 step for was absolutely spectacular 66 pf passing grade in 2019 went up to 90.4 in 2020 big time throw rate went from 2.8% to 5.8% |
| 2:47.0 | His turn reward the play rate decrease for the second straight year yards per attempt went from 6.7 to 7.9. And that just a completion rate went all the way up to 79.1%. Still a great fancy cubie. In fact, the best fancy cubie last year. |
| 3:02.0 | And again, just those improvements all the way around were incredible. The only issue. And remember, his turn of the world he played rate did drop and went from 3.9% to 3.5%. It was 5% as a rookie. He's getting better and not making bonehead decisions. But, you know, he is only so much you can do. You got you want that beast. You want Josh Allen to be, you know, the same beast, but a different monster. You guys ever see that Kobe Bryant Kanye West. |
| 3:27.0 | Video from a while ago, it's, you know, Kanye looking at Kobe and Kobe just tells him, you know, like more, more records more awards. Because are you different beast. But the same animal. I think those words words and Kanye is just like, what the, what the F. He talking about Kobe Bryant. |
| 3:43.0 | So Josh Allen in 2020 was the same beast, but a different animal. We need him to continue to kind of get in on that just a little bit more because again, he was still reckless with the ball. Only Carson wants to have more turn over with the plays last season. |
| 3:56.0 | It kind of is a factor though, people and I'll try to pull up this leader, but I'm talking here. Turn over with the plays. Okay, you don't want turnovers. But it is a little bit of a factor in a quarterback. That's one of the chances down field. And drop Josh Allen's career. |
| 4:10.0 | For better and for worse, usually better in 2020, more so on the worst side of things in 2018, 2019, Allen forced defenses to cover every square inch of the field, because he has a freaking halitzer for a right arm. And he can run around like and he's got the freaking decision making at times where he never know what's going to happen. |
| 4:29.0 | So truly, when he's back there, you don't know because of that last year, he had 22 turnover worthy plays, Carson once had 24 drew lock had 22. But he's just then though, if you do that top three, it's not going to make Josh Allen look all that good. |
| 4:43.0 | So down to top five, we see Matt Ryan number four and then Patrick Holmes, Chabisky, Ryan Tanahill, Nick Mullins, tied at five. There was a fine line between, you know, being too turnover worthy and are just doing too much of that. And, you know, making smart football decisions, Allen's getting better to tone that line the more appropriate manner, just so as a little bit of a ways to go. |
| 5:05.0 | And that's really the only knock we can give him at this point. I mean, he was the leagues basically best play action, past or last year, which is helping him out, but even just removing those, I mean, when he was under pressure, he was actually third and touchdown passes behind only Aaron Rogers and the Sean Watson. |
| 5:20.0 | And that's better people because remember, pressure grades and performance can be a little ball toe from year to year there, usually a smaller sample size of plays at a core record was under pressure. And yeah, you know, it's hard to throw when you got guys freaking dragging you the ground and stuff. So the fact that he was that good when he was kept clean, which is the more stable to metrics tells you all you need to know and find the way to get the ball. |
| 5:48.0 | And finally, he has pf that second high school quarterback when throwing passes first read since 2019. So I know the bills, you know, these are a lot of RPO these a lot of screens, we got those passes, Isaiah McKenzie, there are instances where the design and the scheme from from Brian, they were able to make life. |
| 6:07.0 | And then he was awfully easy on Allen, make no mistake about it people like Allen is the engine of this bills offense and they would, you know, just not be anywhere near to what they were last year, which was the number two scoring offense in the league without Josh, so with all that said, look, again, one issue, |
| 6:26.0 | and he's in line to necessarily be any worse than that going in next year, pf ranks, the bills offensive line as a league 13th best unit, I had a 2021, but I was looking at it and last year they actually had the 21st highest pressure rate and on the surface, that's bad, we want to quarterbacks to have time to throw. |
