For months, Flanders Fields had known nothing but war. On the western front, the trenches

snaked almost 500 miles from the Swiss border to the North Sea. Young Europeans were locked

in a death grip, living day-to-day in the muck and filth of trench warfare. For months, hopeful

optimists from both sides have been repeating the sentiment that the war would be over by Christmas.

They were wrong. The war would rage on for years yet.

There was something significant that happened during the Christmas of 1914, though.
