I just used up all the available washing machines downstairs and it's never been so luxurious. I'm Jacob Rosales. I'm 20 years old. I'm from the Pine Ridge

Indian Reservation in South Dakota in the United States. Pine Ridge is the tribal headquarters. It's where the majority of my tribe,

the Oak Lala Lachota, reside. And it lies, yeah, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which is a huge expanse of grasslands and bad lands covering

or around 3,400 square miles or so. So it's a pretty expansive piece of land.

For young people, Pine Ridge can be a pretty tough place to grow up. You know, you see poverty, unemployment, gang violence, drug addiction,

and alcoholism.

They're everywhere and you hear it from the news all the time.

And although times are changing, it remains economically one of the poorest and most

underdeveloped places in the country.

And you see similar situations in the other reservations across this country.

There are around 567 tribes and 229 Alaska Native communities.

So growing up in a place like this, it's kind of impossible not to be exposed to these hardships.
