Summary

Lizzie Borden was an American woman tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. No one else was charged in the murders, and despite ostracism from other residents, Borden spent the remainder of her life in Fall River. She died of pneumonia at age 66, just days before the death of her older sister, Emma. The Borden murders and trial received widespread publicity throughout the United States, and along with Borden herself, they remain a topic in American popular culture to the present day. They have been depicted in numerous films, theatrical productions, literary works, and folk rhymes and are still very well-known in the Fall River area. Hello friend, before we get into the final episode of Lizzie Borden, I wanted to take

0:59.2

the time to think Carrie mimics for for her iTunes review. Hey Carrie, I'm glad you love

1:05.0

the podcast. I know you could be anywhere right now, but I'm glad you're here.

1:10.3

Divine Misty only left two out of five stars, feeling like the episodes were too short,

1:16.1

and said the three parts on Lizzie didn't provide enough information. I'm working on

1:20.3

longer episodes now. My aim is for around 20 minutes for each episode. You wouldn't know

1:25.9

this by listening, but I actually grew up with a bad stuttering problem. And when I record,

1:31.4

it tends to come out. I will trip up on a word and have to keep rerecording those lines

1:36.9

over and over again. So although you may get a 10 minute episode, it takes a very long time

1:42.2

for me to record it. Not to mention, edit, or write, research, or investigate the case.

1:48.6

But stick with me, you will notice longer episodes soon. For the rest of you listening,

1:54.0

I'd love to hear your feedback, even if it's just where you're listening from. How long

1:58.4

you've been listening, or how you found me. You can leave that feedback to me on Apple podcasts.

2:05.1

Now let's get into the season finale of Lizzie Borden.

2:14.9

Welcome listener to the fifth and final episode in the series, where I'm talking about Lizzie

2:20.0

Borden and the murders she committed allegedly. In the last four episodes, we've explored the case

2:26.7

and looked at several different angles. The court proceedings revealed one shocking detail

2:31.9

that shifted the focus away from Lizzie and towards something, perhaps greater. It began with

2:38.4

assumptions and circumstantial evidence. Prosecutors pinned the murders on Lizzie, stating a woman's

2:44.8

natural cunning slinus as justification, which the jury wouldn't accept as actual evidence.

2:52.0

The acquittal was noteworthy because it symbolized the victory of the rule of law over personal

2:57.8

prejudice. But why did it happen? Why would anybody even think that Lizzie, a Sunday school teacher
