0:33.0	All right, did you know that art crime isn't just in movies?
0:36.0	Forgery is a serious issue in the art world.
0:39.0	Some estimates say nearly half of all art on the market is forged or has an incorrect history.
0:43.6	Gasp!
0:45.6	And the problem is only getting worse.
0:48.6	The efforts to copy famous works are getting more and more elaborate.
0:52.3	Thankfully, the authentication systems are getting equally as elaborate,
0:55.6	and the newest one might surprise you.
0:57.4	It's carbon.
0:58.8	I've always wondered how art forgeries are sussed out.
1:02.3	You'd think repainting a painting wouldn't look right, but some of the forgers are really talented artists in their own right.
1:08.5	And the primary way to discover a forgery is through image analysis and x-rays. These tell us if a forgery is
1:14.3	painted on top of another painting, but even these techniques are only moderately
1:18.4	successful. But the newest innovation in detection technology is showing
1:22.3	real promise, radio carbon dating.
