Luke chapter 1, verses 1 through 4.

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been

accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers

of the word have delivered them to us. It seemed good to me also,

having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you,

most excellent Theopolis, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Thus begins the book of Luke. What we know is one of the four gospels

was actually a letter in a sense, written to Theopolis, to help Theopolis see the truth about

who Jesus is and what Jesus has done. I love the picture here of Luke saying,

I want to be a faithful witness to what I have seen in Jesus in order to help you, Theopolis,

see him for who he is. And it's interesting. Luke wrote one other book in the bible which we know is the book of acts

and how does that book begin in chapter one there it's jesus saying to his disciples you're going to be

filled with power from the holy spirit so that you will be a what?

A witness, an eyewitness so that you will testify to the truth of who Jesus is.

The picture here in the beginning of Luke is a picture of all of our lives.

Every one of us who has seen the glory of God in the face of Jesus

is a witness filled with the Holy Spirit, with the responsibility and opportunity and

privilege and honor of being a witness to who he is, to pass on to others, to the

theophiluses in the world around us, in the sphere of influence in which we live, the people

you have relationships with, the people you interact with, that we are called to be witnesses to them. And so I just want to encourage you to

see yourself, your life in this light today as a witness to encourage other brothers and sisters
