Summary

Alex Kalinauckas and Mark Mann-Bryans discuss the United States Grand Prix from the track itself as Ferrari would dominate proceedings with a 1-2 finish, with Charles Leclerc taking his third win of the 2024 season. Alex talks in-depth about the main story of the race, the controversial five-second time penalty that dropped Lando Norris off the podium and behind his title rival Max Verstappen, as the reigning World Champion went off the track to try and defend his position. Alex ponders whether Max's tactics are shades of his title fight in 2021 with Lewis Hamilton, what the stewards can do to stop it, and whether it's hurting the racing product in real-time. There's also a deep dive on Mercedes after George Russell went from the pitlane to sixth, Hamilton's disastrous weekend ending with him spinning into the wall, and a brief look ahead to next weekend's Mexican Grand Prix. Hi everyone, welcome to Cota, where we've had a very interesting Sunday, a very interesting United States Grand Prix.

People who watch it all the time will know either Alex or I normally standing with our little

0:20.8

notebooks and we go through a list of topics. Alex has bought his big notebook tonight and we're going

0:26.4

to probably only get through one thing because this man has probably seen a replay of the Norris

0:30.7

overtake on Max and staff and more than anyone else. First of all, Alex, fill us in on what

0:34.2

actually happened and then tell us why it was the wrong decision from the stewards in your opinion. Well, that is absolutely my opinion, Mark, but we haven't even

0:43.0

spoken about the race winner, Charles de Clair. That's true.

0:45.3

Ferrari won two for Carlos Sites and that says it all really, what a sad situation this is,

0:49.1

but Ferrari produced a great race and it's not the main talking point. But yeah, I mean, I've got two pads here because I've got a lot to say about it.

And these are the rest of my notes, the rest of my video.

I like to turn my microphone off.

1:00.0

I like to have it on that one.

1:01.0

But yeah, I think the problem here is essentially, Max Rastappen is incredible.

1:07.0

There's no getting away from that. I'm not here to really have a go at him or really criticise him because what he's doing is allowed in the rules. That is the problem. Okay. And it's not even that it's qualified and codified because I've seen a copy of these racing guidelines that the drivers go on about a lot. I've seen that's the night after the race. And effectively effectively they just don't cover what Max is doing.

1:28.9

And what Max is doing is a perfected version of what he did to Lewis Hamilton at Turnpour in Brazil in 2021.

1:36.6

In that occasion, and I pointed this out to Andreas Stella and the Clarentine Principal, who said he disagreed that they were similar, although we'll get to why they are similar,

1:44.4

but then he said you can't commend directly because in that scenario, Max was at much higher

1:50.4

speed, both off the track. If they, if there is contact, it's a plane, it's a plane crash accident,

1:54.3

right? So in this case, it's done at much lower speeds. And he does it at turn one as well,

1:59.1

also a contentious point because that wasn't

2:02.0

penalised and the one at turn 12 much later in the race when Landon Norris was bearing down,
