Summary

This is the second instalment of our special mini-series focusing on extraordinary people with remarkable stories to share. Gabby was inspired to break away from the usual roster of celebrities and experts, and instead spotlight ordinary people who have real insight when it comes to overcoming adversity; Fiona Spargo-Mabbs has exactly that.

In 2014, Fiona’s worst nightmare became a reality when a police officer stood on her doorstep in the early hours of the morning and informed her that her youngest son, Dan, was in intensive care. This was the start of the worst few days of her life, as specialists raced against time to counter the effects of an extremely strong dose of MDMA (ecstasy) which Dan had consumed whilst at a rave with his friends. All of them had taken the drug, but Dan had been the one who had unknowingly taken the dose which was twelve times stronger than had caused deaths in the past.

Dan never came home, and in the years since, Fiona has had to come to terms with her family’s new reality. She talks about this, and how she and her husband, Tim, have thrown themselves into making sure that teenagers and parents have the drug education they need in order to avoid any other young person dying needlessly. You can find out more about The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation here, and purchase Fiona’s book I Wish I’d Known here.

TRIGGER WARNING: This week's episode contains a conversation about the loss of a child.

Hello, today's episode is brought to you by our sponsors, the Boots Beauty Awards. The

0:37.4

Boots Beauty Awards are making a dazzling return for 2023, and this year's awards are all about

0:43.2

celebrating you, the real people who matter. This year, Boots are asking their community

0:48.6

and the everyday beauty buyers to vote for their favourites across 13 beauty categories.

0:54.2

It's all about your voice, your choice and your vote. European Union matters in shaping

0:58.7

the future of beauty, and there are a lot of different categories. For example, the Glow

1:03.4

Getter category, and in this category, there are some fantastic choices. My favourite might

1:08.7

well be the Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray Vitamin C. Often, I have to have

1:14.9

makeup on for hours and hours when I'm on telly. Even when I'm going out socially, sometimes,

1:19.6

it's nice to think that it's staying in place and you haven't got to keep into the toilet

1:23.3

to see whether or not you need to give yourself a little freshener up. I've really got

1:27.2

used to using All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray and the Urban Decay is definitely the one

1:31.6

for me. And in the Payday Treat category, I really like the NARS blush. I'm a big fan

1:39.3

of a little bit of blusher, especially as we're getting towards winter and our skin starts

1:43.0

to get a little bit palier and you need your cheeks to look a little bit more ruddy as

1:46.2

if you've just been outside doing a brisk walk. And this is such a natural colour, the NARS

1:50.6

blush. So I really like that one. And finally, your super scent category. There are so many
