This week we spoke with a 12-time NCAA All-American swimmer Riley Gaines.

She's also now a spokesperson for the independent women's forum, after graduating from the University

of Kentucky.

We spoke to her as more state to pass laws regarding transgender rights.

This week, for example, Kansas became the latest state to ban transgender people from using

the bathroom that matches their gender identity in certain places.

The legislature there overrode the governor's veto.

And also this week, Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz signed a bill making his state a refuge

for transgender individuals, codifying their rights to gender-affirming health care.

Now Riley Gaines tied with transgender swimmer Leah Thomas for fifth place and a championship

swim race last spring.

Gaines has since pushed back on the idea that transgender women should be competing in girls

and women's sports.

Most recently, speaking out alongside her North Carolina high school volleyball player, who

was badly injured when a transgender athlete on her opposing team spiked a ball that slammed

into her face.

Gaines insists she's not trying to bully transgender people, but she is trying to protect female

athletes.
