On the first official commemoration of Juneteenth, we sat down with the

secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie Bunch to talk about the significance of that

holiday and how the past is never really passed and how the museums look at the present for what it will tell us in the future.

I didn't realize there was such a thing as a historical rapid response team and was fascinated to learn

about just what it is that they scoop up and how they do it.

We were surrounded by the redstone of the original Smithsonian Building, which also holds the

remains of its founder.
