I'm Lisa Brady. They call it the Mississippi miracle, an education transformation that began more than a decade ago.

And in the years since, it's made the state a bright spot in what's known as the nation's report card.

An assessment that nationwide tends to fuel more debate about declining test scores and how to help students do

better. But Mississippi's reading proficiency levels have soared. For instance, fourth grade scores

jumping from last in the nation to the top 10 since the state's literacy-based promotion act

was approved in 2013, a comprehensive effort focused on grades K through three that has since been expanded.

So we spoke with Mississippi's now former Republican Governor Phil Bryant, who signed the original

act into law about how far the state has come, the goals and methods that have made the program

work so well, and the potential for other states to do the same.
