Dr Joel Greenberg talks about the vitally important work of another lesser-known figure from the Government Code and Cipher school, Gordon Welshman.

Among his many achievements, Welshman designed changes to Alan Turing's bomb machine,

which was used throughout the war, to find the daily settings for Enigma.

But his greatest work may have been when he drew up the organisational plan for Bletchley Park,

Ladies and Gemma, it is my great pleasure to introduce my colleague, Dr. Joel Greenberg,

who is going to give a talk about Gordon Welchman, Joel. Afternoon, yes, I'm here to talk about Gordon Welchman, one of the less well-known but equally

important people who worked at Bletchley Park during the war. Gordon Welchman was born in

Fishponds, Bristol in June 15th, 1906. He was a son of a clergyman. His father was the Archdeacon of Bristol Cathedral,

William Welchman. In fact, all of Welchman's family were a clerical gentleman. He was a sole

exception. Welchman was the only member of his family, not to go into the clergy, apart from his

eldest brother. He was the youngest of three.
