The Turing Test in a talk called Turing and Artificial Intelligence.

1:03.5

We're really looking now at the Turing test.

1:07.3

Alan Turing is all sorts of things that he was involved with.

1:13.1

Well, in the field of artificial intelligence, the Turing test is a well-known milestone.

1:19.1

There's all sorts of philosophical arguments about what it proves, what it doesn't prove, etc., etc.

1:25.8

In a sense, I'm going to skim through some of the philosophy, sort of sprinkle it in as we go through.

1:29.4

The main thing that Huma and I are going to look at are practical tests. The whole basis of this churing test is based on what Choring himself called

1:36.2

the Choring imitation game is to get a machine. And really, he was saying this back in 1950 1950 so he was looking ahead and to get a

1:46.3

machine a computer to pretend to be a human in a conversation to fool you the

1:53.0

interrogator so that you can't tell the difference the machine's performing so you're

1:58.8

going to have to perform a little bit yourself we're going to put you on trial as much as anything else

2:04.6

just one or two things to start with

2:07.7

touring had posed this as we've heard before as an experiment an argument rather than answering the question can machines machines think, this was a test? Rather along

2:20.6

the same lines, if you look at the person next to you and to decide, does that person think?

2:27.3

How will you decide that, okay, they look human and all that sort of stuff, but how can you test?

2:33.1

And it's that, sort of ask them a few questions, see how they answer.

2:37.3

It's like an interrogation as you would get in an interview procedure.

2:42.2

But very much the sort of first part, the first few minutes, that's what Charing was looking at.
