The last penny was stamped at the United States Mint in Philadelphia in November 12th. The Mint says taxpayers will save $56 million a year. Pennies cost more to make than their worth. It still work, and there are a lot of pennies out there, but some retail businesses are already reporting a shortage, having to round some transactions to the nearest nickel. There are legal headaches in some cases, too, related to state laws requiring perfect change.

We talked about all of this with Philip Diehl.

He was the U.S. Mintz director from 1994 to 2000 during the Clinton administration.

He's been all for getting rid of the penny and making other changes, too, but says there needs to be more federal guidance about how it'll be handled.

A lot of us here, me included, learn some things and enjoyed the conversation,

which was too long to fit into the time we have in our regular rundown podcast and radio show.

Philip Diehl, former U.S. Mint director. Thanks for coming on the Fox News rundown. Let's make clear, Philip, first of all. Pennies are going to still work, maybe forever. They just aren't going to make anymore. Yeah. That's right. They're not going to make anymore, but they'll continue to circulate and they'll be legal tender. about how, well, first of all, let's explain how that works. I mean, they can stop making the penny under the Treasury's Secretary's authority, but Congress has to say, no, pennies don't

work, and they're not going to do that. That's right. We've stopped producing other coins in

the past, but they remain legal tender until Congress acts and eliminates it by law.

Yes. I mean, you can go spend those saccajuia dollars and, you know, and the Kennedy coins and everything else.

Again, presumably forever.

That's right.

And you were, you called for this. You were saying it was time to do this 30 years ago,

and presumably the costs have only gone up.
