A recent report from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, or HRSA,

reviewed 350 organ transplant cases managed by Kentucky organ donor affiliates

and found 100 cases have what they called concerning features.

In some cases, donors were still showing

neurological signs of life, indicating the organ procurement process began for some patients

before they were officially declared deceased. The report led to some shocking headlines,

a congressional hearing, and many Americans questioning if they could trust our country's

organ donation system. We recently spoke with

the chief of the Health Resources and Services Administration's organ transplant branch, Dr. Raymond Lynch,

about the alarming report, the organ transplant process, and what they're doing to ensure it's done

properly. Dr. Lynch discussed what went wrong in the cases where the transplant processes began too early,

but also emphasized how well the system generally works and how it's vital in saving lives.
