Lord of the Great Abyss, Nuada of the Silver Hand, the Elder God, Nodens.

Nodens is another interesting figure within the mythos, as he is often called one of the elder gods.

And so at this point, I think it is time that I discuss the differences between the various

classifications of deities within the Cthulhu Mythos.

First, you have the outer gods, such as Azathothoth, Yogsathoth, and Nearlethotep.

These are in arguably the most powerful beings in the mythos, often existing outside of our normal space and time.

Secondly, we have the great old ones, such as Cthulhu, Haster, Satogua, and many others.

These beings are considered less powerful than the outer gods, and are often confined to a single

physical location.

Finally, we have the elder gods, including Nodens, Bast, Hypnose, and many others.

This classification was not created by Lovecraft, but instead by one of his correspondents

and friends, August Dürleth.

Dürleth, a devout Christian, decided that the elder gods were good beings,

diametrically opposed to the evil outer gods, and were meant to battle them in a grand struggle for the sake of existence.

This view is almost completely disregarded within the mythos community, but Duraleth's naming of the elder gods did stick around.

Nodens is based on the Celtic deity of the same name, and Lovecraft likely created him based on Arthur Makin's story, the great god Pan.

Nodens first appeared in the strange high house in the mist, and later in the dream quest of unknown Kadaith.

In both stories, Nodens appears to seemingly offer advice and assistance to the protagonist.

Nodans is the Lord of the Great Abyss.

While Abyss here is a clear reference to the sea, it would also seem to reference

the underworld, or perhaps hell. Nodens is often seen as an elderly male, with white hair

and gray beard, riding a chariot formed from a large seashell pulled by legendary creatures.
