Techno-horror is a genre that has existed for quite a while, but has ramped up in recent years

over fears like AI and virtual reality.

Fears related to new technology date back to, well, the first technology, with the optimists

balancing out the skeptics and pessimists.

Horror in general has often been a way for creator to showcase a piece of the cultural

zeitgeist at the time, such as with films like Godzilla being linked to Japan's terror

of the nuclear bomb. Pulse is a Japanese horror film from 2001, being made right around the time when the Japanese

were beginning to take a wide-scale interest in the World Wide Web. Its plot, however, has less

to do with the Internet as it does with ghosts invading the physical realm and the loneliness

they might carry with them. Let's take a look.

The film opens with a ship at sea as a young woman stares out at the dark water. She narrates

that it all began one day without warning, and we flash back to the woman, Michi, who works at a

plant shop. They're trying to get a hold of Michi, who works at a plant shop.

and they haven't heard from him in a week.

One of her co-workers has a feeling that something is horribly wrong,

so Michi decides to take a trip to his apartment to check in on him.

He doesn't answer the door, so she finds a spare key nearby and heads in.

While rifling through the apartment for the disc, she finds Taguchi, who apologizes for not responding.

He seems fine and tells Michi where the disc is, but as she finds it, he stops responding.
