Hello and welcome to Weird Wild World, a weekly series that takes a look at the

0:07.1

power of nature. From natural disasters to rare and strange phenomena and

0:12.0

everything in between we will take a look at the

0:14.4

wonder and weirdness of our planet. I'm the aluminati and today we're going to

0:20.9

be exploring yet another fascinating fact about nature that I found particularly

0:24.8

interesting and relating to all of these volcano topics that apparently I'm just going a whole ham into.

0:30.3

Lahars. So Lahars are essentially liquid concrete rivers that follow

0:35.6

volcanic explosions. So now that you got the gist of what we're talking about,

0:38.9

let's dive right into it. So a lahar to put it simply is a bit.

0:52.0

So a lahar to put it simply is mud that flows down from slopes of volcanoes.

0:57.1

A lahar is an Indonesian term however and these concrete rivers as they're often

1:01.6

referred to can be found around stratovolcanoes all over the world.

1:05.8

The reason why lahars almost always occur by these kinds of volcanoes in particular is because

1:11.2

stratovolcanoes tend to erupt

1:13.0

explosively and their tall steep cones are either snow-covered,

1:17.2

topped with a crater lake, constructed of easily eroded rock

1:20.6

debris, or internally weakened.

1:23.0

Lahars are common under these conditions because, well, think of them as a volcano

1:27.8

landslide.

1:28.8

Tall steep cones and rocks are going to make them all the more dangerous. Although it may be known as a volcanic

1:35.7

mud flow, lahars can vary in temperature and they don't actually need a volcanic eruption to occur,

1:41.8

which is something I didn't actually know. One source state a volcanic you may find on top of a volcano or by ejecting water from a crater lake.
