This experience tells us something different about our own understanding of the world.

Or should I say, how we construct that understanding of our world.

So I've often made the joke that we are the awakening of bacterial consciousness.

And I say this both metaphorically and also perhaps literally because I believe that every

experience we have is in consciousness where else could it be but human

consciousness very different from other species consciousness when you

begin to understand this you'll realize in fact that there is no such thing as a universe.

Each species has its own experience of the universe.

There's a butterfly, for example, known as the painted lady.

She hears through her wings, she tastes through her feet, she smells through her antenna, and she has 30,000 lenses in her eyes that move like a kaleidoscope, giving her the experience of shimmering presumably colors, shapes and forms.

What is that experience?

Who knows?

And we can take this example to any other species.

A snake senses the world through infrared radiation.

A bat experiences the world through the echo of

ultrasound. We have no idea what these different species or
