the Hawaiian island of Molokai is home to one of the most remote peninsulas in the world. For over a century, thousands of people suffering from ma'i ho'oka'awale, or the “separating sickness” were ripped from their families and forced to the Kalaupapa peninsula, doomed to spend their lives in exile.
