Summary

Sebastian Budgen returns to the show to talk about the second round of the French legislative elections. We discussed the breakthrough of Jean Luc Melenchon's NUPES coalition and the broader prospects for the left following Emmanuel Macron's failure to secure a majority. We also talked about the historic breakthrough of Marine Le Pen's national rally and the breakdown of the so-called Republican front against the far right. Finally, we talked about where Emmanuel Macron goes from here, and whether or not his Ensemble coalition will be able to ally with the conservative Republicans, in order to pass legislation.

Okay, so I would say that the reaction of most of the people on the left to the election result is very mixed.

0:07.1

On the one hand, it's quite a substantial result.

0:10.2

It's a very big increase on what was admittedly a poor vote in 2017,

0:15.9

both in terms of vote numbers and most importantly in terms of seat numbers. There's a very substantial

0:22.7

increase of the seats that the La France Insoumise won. The Greens have got a very substantial

0:30.3

number of seats too. And the Socialist Party and the Communist Party, I mean the Socialist Party

0:34.7

got fewer seats, but at least they're still around, as it were, and so on. So, you know, it's a very substantial, you know, it's a very

0:42.4

decent result in that sense. And of course, it's very decent in the sense that ideologically,

0:49.8

the whole period between the two rounds of the legislative elections was dominated by this notion that

0:55.7

Nupes had a chance of perhaps winning a majority. And so there was an enormous amount of ideological

1:02.1

backlash against that, big red scare against Menarchon, against the idea of a Menarchant-led

1:08.7

government. And they really dominated, if you like, the narrative,

1:12.1

which has its own problems, as we'll come to later.

1:15.7

But, you know, so ideologically, in terms of seats and in terms of votes, to some extent,

1:20.2

you know, it's a very decent result.

1:21.5

However, there are two major caveats.

1:23.7

One is obviously the abstention, which was extremely high, wasn't the highest ever, but it's

1:30.3

among the highest ever abstention levels that we've seen in a legislative election. So, you know,

1:36.1

it's just over 40% of people who voted. Admittedly, that was during a massive heat wave,

1:42.7

which wasn't the best conditions ever for motivating people to

1:46.1

turn out to vote. But, you know, as we know, abstention hits those categories, which are the

1:53.7

kind of core constituencies for the radical left, as well as for the far right. So the
