Hello everyone, welcome back to the Epic Gardening podcast in this Shmorgasborg episode

0:19.6

of incredible guests we have Peggy and Montgomery and Dan Benarsig, both horticulturists, and

0:25.9

we also have some rain oaks of homes that Brooklyn and her new project flock so everyone

0:31.1

we've talked a lot about bulbs and if someone's really excited and they're like chomping

0:35.3

at the bit to get them going but they never have done it before I suppose Dan maybe you

0:40.6

could give us a prime run how actually do you plant bulbs the basics?

0:45.8

That's a fair question so the public garden that I work in is called Chanticleer and we're

0:49.6

just west of Philadelphia you're in the the Mid-Atlantic region we're recording about 50 acres

0:55.9

and every year we're planning between 100,000 to 250,000 bulbs it's just that's how many

1:04.0

bulbs you need to have any sort of real effect in a large garden space so over the many years

1:10.2

that I've been working there we put plenty of bulbs in the ground some of them perennializing

1:14.1

that is once it will repeat from year to year and others that we had used for a very short

1:18.4

time maybe one or two seasons but the technique is the same it's getting the bulbs laid in

1:24.2

the season in the autumn for us in the Mid-Atlantic and up into the northern tier and getting

1:30.0

them in the ground while the ground is still what we would call warm that is before the

1:34.0

ground freezes so that it can set their roots that will carry them through the winter and

1:39.1

allow them to bloom in the spring so the bulb nurseries grow these bulbs so that they

1:44.4

will bloom that first year for you but the important thing is for those of us that

1:49.0

want perennializing or multi-year bulbs is that we consider where they're going into the ground

1:55.3

bulbs in general don't like wet areas they don't want to be winter saturated with moisture

2:01.0

so high ground is a better site than low ground for example since they bloom early in the spring

2:07.1

before most deciduous trees leave out they're blooming in the sun anyway so it doesn't really
